Care
Keep it sharp.
A sharp edge cuts cleaner and safer. A little upkeep goes a long way.
-
01
Strop often
A few passes on a leather strop loaded with polishing compound keeps the edge keen between sharpenings.
-
02
Sharpen when it drags
When the blade starts to drag or tear instead of slicing, hone it on a fine sharpening stone, then strop.
-
03
Cut on the right surface
A self-healing cutting mat protects the edge and your table.
-
04
Store it dry and protected
Wipe blades after use and keep edges from knocking against other tools. A light coat of oil helps keep carbon steel from rusting.
Technique
Clean stitching holes.
A few habits make the difference between neat, even stitching and a wandering line.
-
01
Mark your line
Scribe a line with a wing divider or groover so every hole lands where it should.
-
02
Keep it upright
Hold the tool straight along the line. Set the first prong in the last hole you made to keep the spacing even.
-
03
Strike with a mallet
Use a plastic, wood or rawhide mallet and punch through the full thickness of the leather.
-
04
Protect the teeth
Work on a punching block. Gluing a piece of thick veg-tan to the top of the block protects the teeth.
