All leather here is Genuine Shell Cordovan leather from Horween Leather in Chicago. Great for small projects like watch bands, card holder pockets, keychains and more.

Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan® is the art of tanning at its finest.  More than just a color, it is a very specific leather, from a particular part of a horsehide.  The irregular oval shaped shells are tanned, stuffed, shaved, and then polished – a process taking at least six months.  Each shell is slowly steeped in gentle vegetable liquors. The shells are genuine hot stuffed then slicked onto glass frames to dry.  Each shell is hand curried and shaved by highly skilled artisans to expose the shell. Dyes are hand rubbed on for a deep aniline finish. Finally, the shells are hand glazed to achieve the rich, glossy look and feel prized by fine craftsmen.

Horween Leather Co.

Chicago, USA

Chromexcel is a combination tanned leather that goes through at least 89 separate processes over 28 working days, using all five floors of the Horween facility.

Retannage comes from tree barks, and dyes from naturally occurring pigments, applied with heat, steam, pressure, hands and time.

Before you order

A natural material.

Real leather comes from real animals, and no two hides are alike. A few things worth knowing.

  1. 01

    Natural marks

Every hide is different. Expect the odd scar, stretch or fat line, and occasionally a brand. They're part of the material.

  2. 02

    Colour

Dye colour can vary between hides and from what you see on screen. If you need to match a colour, order a swatch book first.

  3. 03

    Thickness

Weights are given as a range, like 2–3 oz, because thickness varies naturally across a hide.

  4. 04

    Specific requests

Need an exact size, a certain part of the hide or several matching pieces? Get in touch before you order.

Care

Looking after your leather.

Good leather gets better with use. A little care keeps it that way.

  1. 01

    Keep it dry

Water can mark leather, especially lightly finished hides. Blot spills straight away and let wet leather dry slowly, away from heat.

  2. 02

    Condition sparingly

A light coat of conditioner every so often keeps leather supple. Test on an offcut first, as it can darken some finishes.

  3. 03

    Let it age

Natural leathers darken with light and handling. That patina is part of the appeal.

  4. 04

    Store it well

Keep hides flat or loosely rolled, never folded, somewhere cool and dry.
